Well, I am naming the few blocks in Woodeside, Queens, Little Bangkok because there is a plethora of Thai food! I was with my friend Jess and we were in a yoga studio/shop in LES and the girl working there and I got to talking about food (of course) and I mentioned Sri Pra Phai in Queens and she said her boyfriend is Thai and his family knows all the good Thai places to eat. She recommended Spicy Shallot and another place so I jumped at the opportunity to come here!
Well, it took quite a while to arrive at our table and all the drinks arrived at different times, but we ordered a Thai Iced Tea, a Lychee Juice, and a Sake Mojito (I forgot which one it was!). I also didn't get a picture of the Peachalicious which was peach puree and sparkling wine. But when they all arrived, they were all delicious!
We got some chicken satay because that's one of the few appetizers Matt can partake in! And we were all surprised that it came with some sliced, lightly toasted bread. Jen was intrigued by it and make an open faced sandwich out of it! This wasn't life changing but the chicken was good and juicy.
Roben and Jen ordered the Tom Yum Soup (above) and I ordered the Tom Kha Soup (below). I really like Tom Kha Soup but this seemed to be just coconut broth. The ones I've had in the past were made with a broth, usually chicken or vegetable broth, and added a lot of other flavors in so it surprised me when it arrived. There was also a mixup with my soup so I had to wait a while for that.
We ordered the Crispy Papaya Salad and man it was great! I don't really know what I expected when we ordered it, but the papaya itself was battered and fried and so addicting and so good! For me, the calamari didn't really add anything, but the shrimp was definitely very good! And the green beans were very crispy and perfectly cooked! And I could have added about another five cups of sliced cherry tomatoes they were so good!
We ordered the Pineapple Duck Curry and this was so good! Roben and Jen wanted a curry so we decided on this one and it was so tasty! I could have just eaten this by itself! Well, this and the crispy papaya salad!
Matt ordered a local favorite, the Volcano Crispy Chicken. Man this was great! Matt has a talent for picking out some great Thai dishes, especially since he claims to not like Thai food! I don't think he can use this excuse anymore! I was worried this was going to be Thai spicy but the description said it had a medium spicy sweet chili sauce and that's exactly what it was! This was just great!
Lastly, we ordered the See Eew Noodles with pork! This was so good! The noodles were very big and gelatinous but it just all worked! This was probably the most savory dish out of all of the things we ordered. I love going out to eat with Roben and Jen because they don't have any food allergies and are fairly adventurous eaters so I can try a lot of different things versus with it's just Matt and me, who has seafood and nut allergies we have to be cautious about.
I really enjoyed the food at Spicy Shallot. Everything was really quite tasty. The service definitely left something to be desired. We came on a Friday night and it did get much busier as the night went on, we waited a while for our drinks and they all didn't come at the same time. And when I needed refills of water, it took a lot longer than it should have. But I would definitely still come visit again because the food was really good! It's really close to Manhattan so it's not terrible getting there if you're coming from the city. Definitely try this place out!
